August 31

Dear Covenant family,

Please keep Virginia MacAllister in your prayers.  She is in her second week in the hospital with pneumonia and some internal bleeding.  She "celebrated" her 91st birthday while in the hospital.  While praying, please pray that God will lead us to His location for our new church, and that He will give us willing sellers.

Well -- some folks told me I should dream bigger and expect more when I set the goal to raise $50,000 in the Building Fund between August 1 and the end of the year.  I think we might reach our $50,000 goal.  In the month of August, we received $41,052.13 for the Building Fund!  WOW!  Praise God!  And thanks to whomever gave the 13 cents.  Every gift of any size is useful.  So, am I allowed to reset the goal?  Say $80,000 by December?  Or $100,000?  Or $120,000?  I am so grateful to be the pastor of a generous church with a vision to reach more people with the good news of Jesus Christ.

Another goal I have set on my own is for us to have 150 or more people in worship each Sunday.  The eleven Sundays that I have been here, our worship attendance has been 159, 149, 131, 135, 126, 151,137, 144, 149, 148, and 162.  Thank you for your faithfulness in worship.  Please stay committed to being in worship any Sunday that you are well and in town, and -- this is important -- think about who you can invite to worship with you, and then do it.

The flood waters in Louisiana have started to recede.  13 people died in the floods.  Over 60,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.  Churches, schools, and businesses were flooded.  Our United Methodist Committee on Relief and UM Emergency Response Teams are on site to aid in clean-up and recovery.  They will be there for a long time to continue helping in the name of Jesus Christ.  You can give to the recovery work by making a gift to Covenant UMC and marking it either "UMCOR" or "flood."

On Tuesday, I went to MUST Ministries Smyrna to meet the director, Holly Casey, and to tour the center.  What a wonderful ministry for the homeless and the needy in our community.  Our own Jan Gariety volunteers there every Tuesday and Thursday.  Jan sent me this list of present needs at MUST: Tuna Helper, sugar, canned fruit, mixed vegetables, chili, diapers, socks and underwear for men, women, and children.  There is a MUST collection bin in the fellowship hall by the door leading to the drive-thru.

Well, that's enough for now.  I hope to see you on Sunday as we celebrate a baptism, communion, and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Verge

A Sunday School teacher asked her class, "What was Jesus' mother's name?"

One child answered, "Mary."

The teacher then asked, "Who knows what Jesus' father's name was?"

Another child said, "The Verge."

Confused, the teacher asked, "Where did you get that?"

The little one said, "Well, you know they are always talking about The Verge 'n' Mary."
