OCTOBER 20, 2016

My dear Covenant brothers and sisters,

I am already celebrating, and my birthday is not until next Tuesday.  I've told y'all what I most want for my birthday:

Good gift -- be present in worship on Sunday and do not fall asleep during the sermon

Better gift -- be present in worship and make a gift to our special offering for the United Methodist Children's Home and the Murphy-Harpst Children's Center

Best gift -- be present in worship on Sunday and bring someone who is not usually here to worship with you

Really -- that is what I want.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Also, I want to tell you more about two upcoming ministry opportunities:

1) Every Tuesday morning in November, we will host Coffee and a Blessing.  And you might ask, "What is Coffee and a Blessing?"  Each Tuesday morning from 7:00 to 8:30 we will have some folks standing out on the road (not in the road) in front of our church.  They will be holding signs that say "Free Coffee" and waving and smiling at all the passing drivers.  If folks pull through to actually get a cup of coffee, we will greet them warmly, pour them a cup of coffee, and give them their blessing -- a card with an encouraging, uplifting Bible verse on it -- and send them on their way.  Of course, if someone wants to talk for a minute or two, we will visit with them and even pray with them if asked.  We will need 4-5 volunteers each of the five Tuesday mornings in November.

2) On Sunday, November 6, we will have a Prayer Walk.  We will meet at the church at 2:15 pm to get assignments.  Then we will go out in groups (probably 5-6 people in a group) to walk through nearby neighborhoods and pray.  We will pray for the homes we pass -- mostly silently.  No one will be asked to pray out loud unless he/she wants to do so.  Of course, you may certainly speak to anyone we pass who is out in their yard.  We will walk from 2:30 to 3:30 and then meet back at the church for refreshments and sharing.  Children are welcome to walk with their parents.  If you cannot walk, we invite you to come and spend that hour in prayer in our sanctuary.

Bonus -- if you volunteer for either of these ministries, you get a free Covenant UMC t-shirt to wear as our representative.

I am excited about the days ahead for us as Covenant UMC.  And I am blessed beyond measure to be your pastor.

David

And for your chuckle:

Find Jesus?

A drunk man stumbles across a baptismal service on Sunday afternoon down by the river.

He proceeds to walk down into the water and stand next to the preacher. The minister turns and notices the old drunk and says, "Mister, are you ready to find Jesus?"

The drunk looks back and says, "Yess, Preacher. I sure am."

The minister then dunks the fellow under the water and pulls him right back up. "Have you found Jesus?" the preacher asked.

"Nooo, I haven't!" said the drunk.

The preacher then dunks him under for quite a bit longer, brings him up and says, "Now, brother, have you found Jesus?"

"Noooo, I have not Reverend."

The preacher in disgust holds the man under for at least 30 seconds this time, brings him out of the water and says in a harsh tone, "My God, man, have you found Jesus yet?"

The old drunk wipes the water from his eyes and says to the preacher, "Are you sure this is where he fell in?"
